Such an exciting player;) I have an LP "Heavyweights" which was recorded around the same time frame with Nat Adderley and Barry Harris. Still listening to his rendition of "My old Flame". Thanks

It was about 1965 or '66produced in Buffalo. I saw that band with Sal either the day before or the day after in Toronto at the Palais Royal. I took pictures of the band, and they wore the same jackets. What a great band to see live!

Besides Sal, another upstate NY guy is Buffalo trumpeter Sam Noto, who plays that Dizzy-ish first bridge of the tune. As far as when this video is from, i'd say 1965, because, if I'm not mistaken (and I very well may be), Sonny Payne left Basie around '66 (I think he went with Harry James then).

Of course, it's a big world, full of tons of musicians. It just so happens I'm from upstate NY myself, and Sam is one of those guys you hear about when you're a young musician up there. I just figured I'd give a little play to a guy most people wouldn't know, but might like to know about, and hear more of. And by the way, thanks for all the great videos
